MCG Hosts Knox County Schools CTE Externship with Carter High School Teachers

This past week, Morris Creative Group had the amazing opportunity to provide two dedicated Knox County Schools teachers with first-hand insight into the marketing industry to help further support their students. On Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23, marketing teacher Valerie Wilson and guidance counselor Jessie Bell from Carter High School spent a full day with our staff learning all things marketing from website design and development to social media marketing tools.

As part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Externship Program through the Knoxville Chamber, thirty Knox County Schools educators are placed with partners of the chambers each year to participate in a two-day externship experience. During this time, educators are given the opportunity to assist an employee with tasks and receive training and knowledge on how to overcome industry demands and challenges. At the end of their externship, educators spend a full day incorporating their industry experience into lesson plans to establish a versatile set of skills amongst their students and help them succeed in future careers within the industry.

On the first day of their visit, Valerie and Jessie shadowed web developer Lindsay Loveday to learn more about the web design and development process. They gained insight into the process of video production, after watching a completed video for a client. In addition, Lindsay demonstrated a website redesign, complete with a “before and after” preview of the website.

“The educational and work experience background of the employees was interesting and beneficial in how I can help guide students,” explained Jessie. “Being able to relate real-world experiences into the lives of students is one of the most practical ways to help guide for their future. Having this experience with Morris Creative Group will better enable me to discuss options with students in backgrounds ranging from journalism and creative writing to coding, technology, and art.”

Valerie was also given the opportunity to sit in on a staff meeting and completed courses from the HubSpot Academy with principal Chuck Morris. Valerie completed courses related to inbound and content marketing to incorporate into her lesson plans with her marketing students. Valerie plans on making the HubSpot Academy courses available to her students to allow them to get certifications in highly sought-after skills. “I am so excited to be able to take the things I learned at MCG back to my classroom,” said Valerie on her externship experience. “I will be able to provide my students with real-world examples and projects due to my time with Chuck and his amazing group.”

Our thanks to Valerie and Jessie for their dedication and passion for teaching and mentoring students within the Knoxville community! We are so glad we were able to demonstrate our passion for marketing to help you best support students at your school.
