April Favorites: Lianne La Havas, Fishbowl, and Honey Sriracha Cream Cheese

At MCG, April showers brought May flowers as well as a fresh crop of monthly favorites. From the summer concert you can’t miss to the perfect poolside mixer, we’re sharing all our seasonal standouts.

1. Lianne La Havas… folk-jazz jams for your road trips with friends.

Content strategist Hanna Lustig is obsessed with Lianna La Havas, who will be playing a show at the Bijou in Knoxville this August. “Every summer, I’m drawn back to her most recent album, Blood, like a moth to flame. It’s lush, soothing, and bursting with optimism – the perfect soundtrack for traveling to new places or hanging out poolside. Give ‘What You Don’t Do’ a listen and you’ll be hooked for life.”

2. Kopari Coconut Deodorant… a kinder deodorant for you, and our planet.

Marketing Intern Annie O’Brien has been test-driving a new clean beauty product in the Tennessee heat. “After learning about the harsh chemicals and aluminum that are in the deodorant I’ve been using for years, I decided it was time for a switch. I started using Kopari Coconut Deo this month and I love it. Kopari Coconut Deo is a natural, non-toxic deodorant that is made with plant-based ingredients. I was skeptical about using natural deodorant at first, because I’ve heard that some don’t really work that well. I was pleasantly surprised by how well Kopari does the job and it has a nice coconut smell, too.”

3. Love, Death + Robots…a Netflix series sent from the future.

Love, death… and robots? This Netflix animated series, beloved by marketing intern Nicholas Heim, truly has it all. “With each episode featuring different creators, genres, and animation styles, Love, Death + Robots explores various tales on post-apocalyptic Earths and various galaxies. If you like sci-fi with a touch of horror, this one’s for you. I stumbled upon it by accident and binged it in a night.”

4. Simply Lemonade… the perfect summer cocktail mixer.

Graphic designer and resident mixologist Katie Truppo has a cocktail recipe for every event and season. “Ready for summer and your new seasonal drink? Simply Lemonade has been one of my favorite brands of juice for a while, but when I started mixing it with tequila, it was game over. I like Raspberry Simply Lemonade mixed with Altos tequila and a splash of lime. It’s the perfect sweet and sour drink for those hot summer days by the pool. Blueberry Simply Lemonade is also delicious.”

5. K-Brew… the perfect way to rev up your day in Knoxville.

Marketing intern Nicole Maestri’s monthly favorite is more like a year-round fave. “My monthly fave is K Brew. Honestly, not surprised that I have spent most of my weekends here this past month, especially since their new West Hills location opened. Whether I am studying or hanging out with friends, this spot is the perfect atmosphere. Their bagels are to die for and are the perfect savory addition to coffee. I’m from New York, so I can say first-hand that bagels in the South are not the same. But  KBrew is doing it right, and I can guarantee you these can compete with New-York-style bagels. Do yourself a favor and try their Honey Sriracha Cream Cheese – I guarantee your life will be changed.”

7. Fishbowl… the advertising world’s anonymous discussion board.

Anonymous messaging apps are nothing new. Geared toward creative professionals who work in advertising, Fishbowl is like LinkedIn meets YikYak. After Fishbowl verifies whether you do, in fact, work in advertising, you can then use the app to ask questions, share insights, and consult other users on everything from agency life to client service. Chuck Morris, our principal, is hooked, and highly recommends Fishbowl to anyone in the field.

8. Game of Thrones Season 8…because duh, it’s the best show on television.

It may be summer in real life, but in Westeros, winter has finally come. And that’s a good thing, because graphic design intern Emily Breeden has been waiting a year and half for the final season of Game of Thrones. Based on the popular, high fantasy book series (which was in turn inspired by the War of Roses), Game of Thrones chronicles an epic battle between rival clans for the Iron Throne. Even though the season finale is fast approaching, it’s not to late to jump on the GoT bandwagon. HBONow offers a free, weeklong trial for new viewers. Alternatively, you can add HBO to your existing streaming plan on Hulu and Amazon Prime for a mere $15 per month.

6. Monster Energy Drinks… deadlines have met their match.

Spring is such a busy time of year – it’s peak wedding and graduation season. To stay on top of her hectic schedule and meet her deadlines, web developer Lindsay Loveday has been relying on Monster Energy Drinks. In particular, she likes the coffee-based Java Monster varietal.

7. Wild Boar Tavern… did someone say wings and gourmet burgers?

“Since I’m always in the market for a great gourmet hamburger, I was eager to try Wild Boar Tavern,” office manager Sherrie DeMarcus said. “Although wings seem to be the popular choice, I chose the steak burger described as ribeye, brisket and chuck ground in-house and grilled on an Aztec wood-fired grill. Most excellent, and so were the fries!”
